homeless elderS community LIVING
FROM 2016-2020 we worked as an independent advisor for the Municipality of Antigua, assisting develop a more integrated approach regarding the cities homeless population.
With 50 % of those who sleep on the streets in Antigua being elderly non substance couples and individuals, many of whom already have established friendships and support systems, looking out for each other, sharing meals, and helping take care of each other on the street.
The homeless need homes. With close to zero functioning government services it is up to us all to try to resolve and assist in new ways. International aide and the majority of assistance goes primarily toward children, malnutrition, medical, education and fighting poverty in rural communities.
We believe we must lift all aspects of society simultaneously.
Engaged with this community on an ongoing basis, we worked to design a pilot program based on a repeatable non institutional, non shelter community model that would have the ability to eliminate homelessness 100%.
As our numbers of chronically homeless is low, averaging around 70, with 12 houses we are able to reabsorb pretty much everyone. Focusing on developing long term solutions which truly address individual needs, seeing what each person's situation and interests are; support and align on a case by case basis with dignified work opportunities and community engagement.
The elderly represent the most vulnerable population within this community. Homeless mothers and children are assisted through government department branches, Non for-profit organizations, leaving single men, with and without children, and the elderly who don't fit into any category in particular other than being "homeless" .
